Clear floor and parquet varnish

Clear varnishing means letting the wood show. Not a block of colour, but the grain, the knots and the way oak changes colour over the years. If you have a beautiful floor, you usually do not want to paint it over. Then this is the finish you are looking for.

What do you use clear floor varnish for?

For parquet and wooden floors under normal use, OSB boards and stairs indoors. Suitable for oak. Available in matt and satin.

The varnish is only partly suitable for exotic wood species, and only for non-oily ones. In that case, try a test patch on an inconspicuous spot first. That is a quarter of an hour's work that can save you a lot of trouble.

Matt or satin?

Satin gives the floor a little more depth and reflects light. Matt looks calmer and shows signs of wear less quickly. Technically they are the same: the same wear resistance, the same application.

Application

Shake well before use. The varnish can serve as both the first coat and the final coat, so you do not need a separate product. The surface must be clean and free of dust, oil, wax and grease; if necessary, sand lightly with grit 180 to 220.

Three coats on bare wood. Do not sand after the first coat, lightly sand the second with grit P230, then apply the third as the final coat. Allow 8 to 10 m² per litre.

One thing to watch: no more than twelve hours may pass between two coats. If you wait longer, the next coat will not adhere properly.

When can you use the floor again?

Careful walking is possible after about five hours, light use after one day. Only lay rugs and put furniture back after about five days. Full curing is complete after four to five days at 20 °C.

The more you spare the floor in those first days, the longer the finish will last.

Prefer a colour on the floor?

If you do want to give the floor a colour, take a look at water-based floor varnish. For a concrete floor or exterior work, solvent-based floor varnish is the right choice.
