Solvent-based gloss paint
Solvent-based gloss paint flows out more smoothly than water-based paint and lasts a long time on exterior work. On the other hand it takes longer to dry, allow eighteen hours between coats, and you clean your tools with white spirit. For window frames, doors and exterior joinery it is still an excellent choice.
Three paints, three situations
Exterior work that gets a lot of sun
High Gloss XO is made with siliconised alkyd resin and withstands extreme UV exposure. On a south-facing façade, fascia boards or a canopy, that is the difference between lasting a few years and lasting considerably longer. At 10 to 15 m² per litre it also has the highest coverage in our entire range. This is an exterior paint.
Window frames and doors, inside and out
The solvent-based satin is resistant to scratches, knocks and wear, with high opacity. Suitable for window frames, doors, exterior joinery and plywood.
Primer and topcoat in one go
The system paint combines both steps in one product. Moisture-regulating and highly weather-resistant, handy if you want to keep going. Thin the first coat with about 10% white spirit and apply the following coats undiluted.
Also on metal and plastic
These paints are not just for wood. You can also use them on steel, bare aluminium, rigid PVC and most plastics, provided you first apply Engels Multiprimer. That primer is rust-inhibiting and can be overcoated with these solvent-based paints.
We prefer to keep the type consistent: a solvent-based paint on the solvent-based Multiprimer. The water-based Aqua Multiprimer can also go underneath, as it can be overcoated with both solvent-based and water-based paint. Unsure about your surface? Just drop in and see us.
Light colours indoors: take note
The product data sheets of the solvent-based satin and the system paint carry an explicit warning: light colours may yellow when used indoors. This is inherent to alkyd resin and not a product fault. If you are painting white or a light shade indoors, bear this in mind, or ask us for advice on a suitable alternative.
Preparation and drying times
Degrease the surface with Engels degreaser spray, remove loose paint and sand. Always prime bare wood first with solvent-based primer. Sand lightly between coats.
Do not work in full sun or in wet weather: the paint will skin over too quickly or trap moisture in the coat. Allow one day per coat.
