Primer

A topcoat is only as good as the coat underneath. This page brings together our primers, in both types: solvent-based and water-based.

Wood primer or adhesion primer?

Wood primer goes on wood and wood-based materials. It fills and sands well, so you can get the surface flat before the topcoat goes on. You use an adhesion primer where ordinary primer will not hold: on steel, aluminium, rigid PVC and plastics.

Which one should you choose?

On wood

The solvent-based Engels primer fills very well and sands very easily; after eighteen hours the topcoat can go on. In a hurry? Then the quick-drying primer is the choice: touch-dry after half an hour and recoatable after one to two hours. If you want to work with water-based paint, choose Aqua Primer.

On metal and plastic

Engels Multiprimer is rust-inhibiting and suitable for steel, bare aluminium, rigid PVC and various plastics. It can be overcoated with solvent-based paints. Aqua Multiprimer works under both types of paint, so it is handy if you do not yet know which topcoat you will use.

Preparation

Remove loose paint, clean old sound coats with Engels Degreaser, sand well and remove all dust. Sand lightly between coats. All five are suitable for interior and exterior use and cover 10 to 12 m² per litre.

Water-based only?

This page shows both types together. If you only want to compare the water-based primers, take a look at water-based primer.
