Exterior gloss painting
Outdoors, rain, frost and above all UV light break down a paint film. What you choose and what you put underneath determines how long the work lasts.
The full explanation is on a separate page
Everything about exterior work is brought together on exterior paint: which exterior paint suits which situation, what happens on a south-facing façade, which primer belongs underneath and what to watch out for with the weather.
Two systems
For window frames, doors and exterior joinery you can go either way. Solvent-based gloss paint flows out more smoothly and stays crisp for longer; water-based gloss paint is low-odour and done much faster.
Work that gets a lot of sun
On a south-facing façade, fascia boards or a canopy, UV exposure is the deciding factor. Engels High Gloss XO is made for this, with siliconised alkyd resin.
Never without primer
Leaving bare wood outdoors without primer is a waste of the work. See primer for the coat underneath.
